Spiritual Gift of Giving

The spiritual gift of giving is exactly what it seems like. The person with this gift loves to give, with no expectation of a return. This giving can be time. It can be money. It can be services. It can be absolutely anything that you can give to someone in need.

Romans 12.8 refers to this gift as “contributing to the needs of others.” Where it is not necessary that there be a need, this gift tends to manifest as a blessing upon those who have needs. Certainly, I have witnessed selfless giving in all sorts of ways. In fact the most common way that I see it in youth is not with those who give to the poor, but those who give freely to everyone.

Paul provides an extreme of this gift in 1 Corinthians 13.3 when he says, “If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing.” Where this is not the calling of most who have the spiritual gift of giving, the gift has manifest in many throughout the history of the church in this way. Many wealthy people have come to Christ and abandoned their worldly riches to pursue greater things.

If this gift came up on your spiritual gifts test, you may be the type of person who gives freely to others. I love to give to others. I find myself always wanting to give more, even at risk. I love when my time, money or possessions can be a blessing to others. You may find this as well.

A challenge: if you believe that you have the spiritual gift of giving, then stop and help the poor and the homeless. Be a blessing to others, not just to your friends and family, but to your neighbors and to anyone who you see as less desirable. This isn’t always easy, but remember that with this gift, God strengthens you to give selflessly.
