Importance of Prayer

Prayer is an important part of the Christian walk because it is our primary means for communication with God. 1 John 3 says, “And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ.” Consider your fellowship with other Christians. Are you able to maintain a relationship with them if you never see them and never talk to them?

There is a flip side too. Not only should we talk with God, but we have to know about Him in order to properly have fellowship. For this we go to the Word of God. From cover to cover, we see God for whom he is if we just seek his understanding as we study it. Just like any author, you derive pieces of their life and personality from their writing; we gain knowledge and wisdom of God when we read his word. As it says, “All scripture is God breathed” (2 Timothy 3:16).

Acts talks about the original believers and it says that, “They all joined together constantly in prayer” (Acts 1:14). They understood the importance of prayer to their communion with God. This has an additional connotation though. How are we to pray constantly? Many people pray popcorn prayers throughout the day to keep their mind focused on God’s divine intervention in their lives. Certainly this is a method for accomplishing it, however the ability to stay focused on God is the important part. This can be accomplished in other ways, but I have not experienced any better than prayer except for prayer in conjunction with reading God’s word.

Here is a model for the primary importance of prayer.

Prayer > Read or hear the word > Conviction > Action > Prayer

We pray for God to reveal his wisdom through his Word. We hear it being preached or taught or we read it from the bible. If we have prayed genuinely then our hearts are open and we are convicted or receive an understanding of the Word of God. That leads to action. Whether that is repentance of sin or a call to serve there is an action that can take place. Then it’s back into prayer and start the process over again. This is how God communicates with us so we are to be in his Word continually if we are to communicate properly through prayer.
