is crackin' up here! Every pic that shows up on the FB page has my C in it. And, he's my "avoid the camera if I can" guy! (Not too terribly bad, just doesn't like being the center of attention.)

Hi Anthony,

I see your problem. If we take the genelogies of the Bible, both Old and New Testaments and comprehensive, then we do run into problems and conflicts. We can do two things, accept the Bible the way it is and respect its composition, or we can force some expectation upon it that should never be there.

So many people come to the Bible demanding it be "just the facts" like a news report or history book. That is where our problems come. Your literal expectations that you demand of the Bible will cause it to be inadequate. It will cause conflicts, even reveal contradictions. This kind of unrealistic expectation of the Bible is the source of much mocking by the enemies of the Word of God. As you pointed out, if we take the Genesis chronology and the 1 Chronicles chronology as literally complete, then the Bible contradicts itself.

Let me challenge you to look at the Bible the way the church has looked at it for the majority of its existence, and a telling of the experiences of men and women with the eternal God the Spirit. The church always has seen allegory in the Bible, and never has that allegory threatened the affirmation that the Bible is the inspired Word of God.

Great question and I appreciate the answer. I couldn't emphasize more when you suggest, "But, we have to look at the context" - perfect. Too many times people try to read things into Scripture - being unfaithful to the text. Translation can vary, but in the end we cannot twist things to make them mean what we want.

You talking about a problem that the US church has in interpreting the Bible. John 14:15 is a conditional statement and not a commandment. Jesus is stating that when people love Him, they will naturally be drawn to do what He says we should do. It is not a commandment but a rather simple statement about a truth.

The problem comes here in America when people then come to the conclusion that we must show the outward signs of obedience as proof of our love. Rather than focusing on the love we need to nurture with God, we focus on the "doing" of the rules. We think that if we do everything a Christian should do, we will somehow demonstrate that we love God more. We judge each other on the actions.

I hope that someday churches here will speak of God's love and help people to love God and other more, rather than focusing on what Christians should be doing as proof of their love. Preaching the "do's" makes for empty Christians working hard to prove they love God when they really don't have much of a relationship with Him.

In the gospels (the same Holy Spirit who inspired the passage in Isaiah also spoke this thru Matthew) we read that Jesus healed all the sick that came to him 'that it might be fulfilled' and it quotes from the Isaiah 53 passage.

So God Himself, intepreting scripture with scripture, says that the healing ministry of Jesus (several NT passages mention that Jesus healed all who came to him) was prophesied by Isaiah.
