The context of this passage is God’s plan for salvation. The old covenant as well as the new are both addressed. It also talks about how the new branches, the Christians, are grafted in
among the branches, Israel.
This passage is notable because it addresses the mystery of God’s plan and His sovereignty over it. Specifically it is saying that because of God’s omnipotence, we should be in complete submission to Christ because he created all things, all things were created through Christ, all things were created for Christ and all things were created for the Glory of Christ.
I think the true implication of this passage is that there is nothing we can do that would be better than what Christ can do. We must always actively be seeking how we are to do Christ’s work and never acting by our own ambitions. For this reason I have often used this passage as the object of meditation during my quiet time.
